Since a Vizsla is an indoor/outdoor breed and need their people time, potty training IS A MUST FROM DAY 1.
With any kind of training, set yourself up for success with knowledge of what puppy is thinking, anticipation of puppy behavior, a consistent plan and a reward.
Do this with any desired behavior and you'll find good results. We are a fan of Chet Womack. He isn't the only guru on the web for puppy training, but he's one to start with.
A blog post is here. There are several subjects on this blog page....scroll to the potty training link.
Here are a few Knowledge and Behavior things to get you started.
If puppy is in the process of having an accident, pick them up immediately to interrupt it and take them outside to finish.
If puppy has an indoor accident that you find later, take yourself to the corner and sit yourself on a 5 minute time out because you weren't paying attention. :)
Puppy won't be able to hold it until they are older. If you need to leave them for a while, make sure you don't punish accidents.
Be prepared to loose some sleep. You'll need to get up with puppy in the night as needed to let them out.
Any accidents will need about a dozen or so "Success" events to erase the pattern of the accident.
Control the food. Pre-determine when the puppy will eat each day. Don't let them eat whenever they want. Give them all they can eat in one setting and then remove the food.
We have been feeding them about 4 times a day. Sometimes 3 but mostly 4 times. You can gradually decrease the frequency as they get older, but don't be feeding less than 3 times as a puppy.
Boy dogs and Girl dogs potty train different.
Every puppy is different from the other.
Do what works for you and your puppy. Do a little homework if one method isn't working.
Every dog wants to mark it's territory. No dog wants to potty in it's "home." Teach puppy that it's home is now very big by leading it with a leash around the house frequently.
Reward puppy after every outside potty.
PLAN it out:
Where should puppy go outside? Use this spot every time.
Who will take puppy out? Assign people through out the day to be responsible for monitoring puppies behavior.
What word will you use for the potty command? Pick one and make everyone use the same one consistently with out deviation
Some people will place a bell at the door they leave to go outside and gently make the puppy use it's paw to ring the bell. Later the puppy will ring the bell on it's own to tell you it needs to be let out.
What reward will you use.
